Element reference
Additional information
A title of a manifestation is assigned by an agent who creates the manifestation. A title of manifestation may be based on a title that is assigned by an agent who creates works and expressions that are embodied in the manifestation.
Consider a title that is assigned by an agent who owns the only item that exemplifies the manifestation to be a title of the item and not a title of the manifestation.
A title of manifestation may have one or more of the following characteristics:
- A title may be the same string as the name or title of another manifestation or of another entity.
- A title may be a transliteration by the cataloguing agency from a script that cannot be transcribed.
- A title may be given in different languages and scripts in statements that appear in the manifestation or in external sources. Consider each distinct value as a separate title.
- A title may consist of or include an initialism or a transcription or transliteration of a logo or other image.
- A title may include numbers, punctuation marks, and symbols.
- A title may include a statement of responsibility or edition that is integrated linguistically with the title.
- A title may reflect the characteristics of expressions or works that are embodied in the manifestation.
For an augmented expression aggregate, a collective title may be the same string as a title of an augmented expression or work.
Element values
The value of a title is a literal string (a nomen string).
Record a value that is:
- a title that appears in a statement of title and responsibility that appears in the manifestation
- a title that appears in a statement of title and responsibility that is reproduced in the manifestation
- a title that is associated with the manifestation in an external source of information
String encoding schemes
For a manifestation that has a super-unit, a string encoding scheme for a compound title should combine values of a common title, a unit designation, and a unit title of the manifestation.
Compound title SES is a string encoding scheme suggested by ISBD for Manifestation for a value of this element.
Stipulations
Use the element super-type to record a less specific relationship.
Use an appropriate element sub-type to record a more specific relationship.
Apply the stipulations for the element super-type unless indicated otherwise.
Record a single occurrence of the element that is selected from one or more values that are associated with the manifestation. Use the following order of preference:
- Nomen that is a title proper of the manifestation
- Nomen that is a variant title of the manifestation
Record additional occurrences of the element, if it is considered to be useful for users of the metadata.
Record a value with the same wording as it appears in a statement of title and responsibility in the manifestation. Record a value with minor amendments to capitalisation and punctuation, if it is considered to be useful for users of the metadata.
Record a value that includes a name of an agent or a title of edition that is integrated linguistically with a title that appears in a statement of title and responsibility.
Record a value that excludes a name of an agent or a title of edition that is integrated linguistically with a title that appears in a statement of title and responsibility, if it is considered to be useful for users of the metadata.
If no title appears in any statement of title and responsibility, consider a name of an agent that appears in a statement to be a title.
If no title appears in any statement of title and responsibility or external source of information, and no name of an agent appears in a statement of title and responsibility, record a has access point of manifestation element that is based on a title that is assigned by a cataloguing agency instead of a title of the manifestation.
If an alternative title appears in a statement of title and responsibility, record a value that includes the title and all of the alternative titles with conjoining text and punctuation.
Record additional occurrences of the element for the title alone and for one or more of the alternative titles, if it is considered to be useful for users of the metadata.
For a manifestation that has a media type of "computer", consider the filename to be a title.
For a manifestation that is published or produced in more than one unit, record a value that is a common title of the sub-units. Omit a designation or title of a sub-unit.
For a manifestation that has a super-unit, record a value that is a compound title that combines a common title, a designation of the unit, and a title of the unit, if and as available.
Record an additional occurrence of the element for the title of the unit, if it is considered to be useful for users of the metadata.
For a manifestation that has a super-unit, if a title of the unit is integrated linguistically with a title of the super-unit, record a value that is the integrated title.
For a manifestation that is an aggregate, and if a collective title appears in a statement of title and responsibility or external source of information, record a value that is the collective title.
For a manifestation that is an aggregate, and if no collective title appears in a statement of title and responsibility or external source of information, record a value that is a compound title that combines, in the order of their appearance, the titles of aggregated expressions or works that appear in statements of title and responsibility. Include words and phrases that conjoin the titles but omit statements of responsibility. Do not indicate omissions.
If the number of individual titles is large, include the first few titles and indicate the omission of other titles at the end of the compound title.
If there are no words or phrases that conjoin two titles, add standard punctuation between the titles.
